Performance Analysis of RIP Vs IGRP in a Simulated WAN Environment

Authors : Hussain Muhammad Asdar

Abstract: In order to compare the performances of different routing protocol in WAN environment, a comparative study considering parameters including Delay, Convergence, Link Utilization and Throughput for RIP and IGRP has been simulated. Considering the fact that RIP can not go over 15 for hope count, a small WAN was constructed for simulation. Once completing the simulation successfully, the network was extended to six campuses each in a different city. All the simulation was performed on the software "Optimized Network" (OPNET). These simulations were run for two different scenarios. Scenario-one comprising three Campuses while the scenario-two was extended to six campuses. Heavy WAN traffic with real-time and non-real time applications was generated and the data was used to analyze the performances of the protocols.
