Application of Thermography in Assessment of Rock Mass Behind the Shotcreted Slope

Authors : H.M. Lin , T.L. Lee and J.H. Wu

Abstract: The assessment for the existence of eroded caves behind shotcrete-protected slopes is a vital task for slope engineering because it causes the landslides or slope failures. This paper will provide a new technique to assess the integrity of rock mass behind a shotcreted slope through the thermography technology. Based on the field measured from the Alishan highway, in Taiwan, an effective and efficient method to evaluate the conditions of failure-prevention facilities is proposed after a natural disaster, such as earthquake and typhoon. With the temperature variation calculated from the highest and lowest temperatures measured at each point on the shotcrete surface, the existence and the locations of eroded caves behind the shotcrete surface will be confirmed using the thermography.
