Abstract: Bacteriological examination of milk samples collected from 30 clinically mastitis affected milch cows, was performed during the period of March 2003 to July 2003 of which 11(36.67%) had Staphylococcus aureus infection. The chromogenic characters of the coagulase positive Staphylococcus showed nearly equal distribution of golden, yellow and white strains and therefore were not regarded as a satisfactory criterion to indicate their coagulase status. Of biochemical tests anaerobically mannitol fermentation and phosphatase activity proved to be of value in the identification of Staphylococcus aureus. In vitro drug sensitivity pattern depicted most sensitivity of the organism to cephradine, chloramphenicol,ampicillin(100% each) while erythromycin, gentamicin, penicillin-G, inhibited the growth of 10(90.91 %), 9(81.82%), and 8 (72.73 %) strains of Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Resistance to tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and doxycycline was comparatively high. It was evident that cephradine, chloramphenicol and ampicillin can be better value in the treatment of Staphylococcus aureus infection.
