A Study on Small Business Enterprises in Bangladesh- Searching for Growth Factors and Obstacles

Abstract: Small businesses are the heart of the market-based economy with their business operations in rural and urban areas of developed and developing countries. In Bangladesh, small business enterprises are expected to employ about 87% of the total industrial work force but contributes only 3.3% of GDP. Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, different Governments took many initiatives and framed various policies for the growth and development of SBEs (Small Business Enterprises) but the growth and development in this sector have not yet been achieved due to myriad of obstacles. The present study has identified favorable factors along with obstacles to the growth of SBEs and suggested measures that can be taken for accelerated growth of this sector.
