Quota System for Women Civil Servants in Bangladesh

Abstract: Women`s job quota in public sector was introduced first in Bangladesh in the year of 1972. Under this 10% of the vacant posts were year marks for the affected women in the war of liberation without distributing district quota. Women quota in some portion replaced the affected quota subsequently. In the year 1985 the government of Bangladesh had proclaimed another circular reserving 10 %and 15 % for all gazetted and non gazetted vacant posts for the female candidates respectively. How ever this women quota had been considered with in the district quota by the appointing authority. Women quota system was introduced for bringing the women in the mainstream of development. This quota system was introduced in accordance with the article of the constitution, which empowered the state to make such kind of arrangement. In this study most of the respondents were in favour of quota system in civil service. It indicates the necessity of women participation. Some of them were aware about their equal status which is positive towards social change. Most of the respondent`s opinions were to keep quota system up to 11-20 years. This quota system should be continued up to the period when the men and women education ratio will be equal.
