Authors : F. M. Tladi and A. A. Aganga

Abstract: Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) is the only degree awarding institution of its kind in Botswana. This study was carried out at BCA to determine gender distribution of students and their trainers. Data was collected from records of student admissions into BCA programmes over a 10 year-period and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results obtained showed a skewed admission of male students (75%) in all agricultural programmes of the college with means of 343.27" 124.93 for male students and 100.45" 58.02 for female students (25%) over the 10-year period. The male to female ratio varied from 3:1 to 8:1 while the chi square varied from 41.26% to 91.74% for the period of study. The trainers on the other hand, are predominantly men (74%) in all fields with a ratio of 1 female to 5 male trainers in the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Land Planning. The current situation in the College of Agriculture shows a gender imbalance which will be discussed in the full text. Sugges. to correct the gender distribution will also be made.
