Abstract: The association of rhinosinusitis and chronic bronchitis, termed sinobronchial syndrome, in which a subject following rhinosinusitis due to irritation and inflammation of bronchial mucosa, consequently bronchial muscle contraction and lumen stenosis is suffering from lower respiratory tract obstruction and clinical symptoms of asthma. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma symptoms in patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) who referred to ENT department of Boo-Ali Sina Hospital of Sari, Iran. This study was performed on referred patients affected by chronic rhinosinusitis from February to May 2005. Routine otorhinolaryngological examination and assessment for clinical symptoms of asthma was done for all the patients. Clinical and demographic data were collected in a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. In total 249 patients, 131(52.6%) were men and 118(47.4%) women with mean age of 28±0.85 years. The prevalence of asthma clinical symptoms among patients affected by Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) with Coefficient Index (CI) of 95% was 42%. The longer rhinosinusitis involvement will be associated with more sinobrochial syndrome occurrences (p = 0.01, X2 = 110.7). In addition, presenting irritants factors of rhinosinusitis, will increase the probability of sinobrochial syndrome (p = 0.004, X2 = 221.5). Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) is considered as an irritant factor of clinical symptoms of asthma. Recognition and avoidance from irritant factors are essential in management of asthma. By consider that recognition and avoidance of irritants factors are the basic principles in treatment of asthma, so that treatment of rhinosinusitis as an irritant factor should be noticed.
