A Development of Metadata Registry Management System Using Domain Localization

Authors : Dongwon Jeong and Doo-Kwon Baik

Abstract: Currently, many approaches have been studying on data integration by building a metadata registry. The metadata registry was created by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 32 and is a set of data elements. It provides the method to build and mange a metadata registry for just one domain. Therefore it causes many problems when we apply it to several domains. The most important one of the problems is that it does provide no mechanism to create metadata registries considering differences between the real domains. We define the differences as domain locality. In this paper, we show a system to efficiently build and maintain metadata registries with the locality of domains. To achieve this goal, we first analyzed the differences between real domains. A new structure, HMDR (Hierarchical Metadata Registry), was defined to create and manage efficiently metadata registries considering domain locality. We also designed and implemented a metadata registry system supporting the concept. Finally, this paper includes the results of applying it to real domains.
