Abstract: In this study an attempt has been made to compare the two methods of estimation of the mean value of fecundability by fitting a theoretical distribution from the observed month of first conception of the married women who did not use any contraceptive method before their first conception. Since the cohort of women is not homogeneous, we have attempted to estimate the mean natural fecundability by fitting the Pearson Type-I geometric distribution with parameters p and q to the observed distribution of the first conception delay. In our analysis the parameters are estimated by the method of moments and by the method of maximum likelihood and it has been seen in all cases that the ML estimates fit the model better than do the moment estimates for the whole group of women as well as for the sub group of women classified on the basis of some socio-economic characteristics. This is because the ML estimators are defined for all permissible values of p and q and also satisfy the most of the properties of a good estimator.
