Abstract: This study examines the causal relationship between the renewable energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in the Iran for the period 1970-2013 using gross domestic product, gross fixed capital formation and total population. We apply Dickey-Fuller test, Johansen cointegration, Vector Error Correction Method of distribution (VECM) and Granger causality test. The findings indicate that the renewable energy consumption is significantly and negatively in the long-run. The total population is significant and positive sign and negative in the long-run and short-run, respectively. Since, the GDP coefficient is negative and GDP2 coefficient is positive, Kuznets curve isconcave upward and U-shaped. Results show a unidirectional causality from CO2 to GDP. Also, there isbidirectional causality between CO2 and renewable energy consumption. Therefore, the renewable energy resourcescan help policymakers in making decisions to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions and improve the environment effectively.
