Abstract: Over speeding of vehicles is one of the major reasons for the occurrence of accidents these days. Several methods have been adopted to solve this problem but most of them are largely ineffective, manually operated or depends upon the users ability to be alert while using them. The objective of this research is to provide an automatic speed alert and reporting system using Android which can inform a driver about his speed limit and alert him if he exceeds the permitted speed limit. The speed detection mechanism we have proposed helps in analysing the factors determining the reliability of travel speed in order to construct a methodology for the estimation of travel speed based on global positioning system and consequently to enhance the estimation process to be more economical and accurate. The driver will also be alerted to slow down the vehicle if there are any schools, hospitals or any such crowded areas in a near distance of his current location using the Google Maps API. Using this the driver can also check for the nearby hospitals or petrol bunks in case of any emergency.
